Brantley Harvey '51 believes the atmosphere at The Citadel set him on a course to succeed. At The Citadel he learned self-discipline, time management and how to prioritize, three skills that were keys to his successful law career. He also felt he left The Citadel a well-rounded individual. "I will always believe" Brantley observed, "that my time at The Citadel and what I learned in those four short years attributed to my successful marriage and career in law."
When Brantley and his wife, Helen decided to return this lifelong favor and give back to The Citadel they chose a gift that they, too, can enjoy. The Harveys transferred highly appreciated securities into a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT), enjoyed an income tax deduction in the year of the gift, and avoided capital gains tax by not selling the securities instead. More significant, they both enjoy an income from the unitrusts investment for the remainder of their lives, after which time the corpus will transfer to The Citadel Foundation to support and strengthen the faculty of The Citadel. With this charitable gift, Brantley and Helen will make a lasting impact on future cadets. They believe the way to a quality education is through a quality faculty.
BRANTLEY: "It's important to keep faculty salaries competitive and keep chairs financially secure. I also believe the college should encourage faculty sabbaticals. On sabbatical, professors will grow their knowledge then pass that knowledge on to their students."
Brantley believes that all cadets should take advantage of their time at The Citadel. He advises them to "Do what's necessary to rise in the ranks. Have as many extracurricular activities as possible, but most important, apply diligence to academics. Becoming a well-rounded individual can only help in life."
